A Puppy Not a Guppy

Hey fish friends,

There is a cool new children's book just out by
Holly Jahangiri called A Puppy, Not a Guppy.

We here at Fish School are especially excited about it because it parallels much of the origins of Fish School, and because Holly has been kind enough to show us early versions of her wonderful book, and ask for our expert advise in fish training. It has been great working with her.

The hero of the story is a young girl named Irma. Just like my kids a couple years ago, Irma wants a puppy but her parents think puppies are too much trouble, and instead buy her three guppies.

Irma is disappointed at first and to cheer her up, her parents suggest she try training her guppies to do tricks like a dog. Irma thinks its a silly idea, but is willing to give it a try - anything to make her fish more interesting. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but if you know the history of Fish School, you know the story has a happy ending!

The book is wonderfully illustrated by the talented artist Ryan Shaw, and even includes information about the real-life story of Fish School. Thanks for mentioning us Holly!

A Puppy, Not a Guppy is available at, and we here at Fish School give it two fins up!

LOL - I saw the video showing the origins of fish school! I think your KIDS capture Irma's expression perfectly!

Thanks, Dean - you were one of the FIRST ever to read A Puppy, Not a Guppy, and I am so glad you like it! (I think this, and your Fish School, would make a great Christmas present!)

I like this post, and I like what you're doing, Dean.

I always liked to watch fish because watching them soothes me.

I remember Holly telling me about finding you and your methods. She was so excited that maybe she had a good idea, even if she didn't know about it until after we were processing A Puppy, Not a Guppy.

It was almost as funny as my son finding Choco Tacos in the Ace Hardware store, after Trockle was printed...

How cool is that? A real school FOR fish. Heheh!

Your new book will inspire a new "breed" of fish trainors, Holly!

I agree - we should bundle your book with our training kit. Together they would make a great Christmas gift!

A fish school. So there really is one. And how cool that it's part of the novel. It's added a cool new dimension to Irma's story.

OMIGOSH!!! Guess what I just put on my list for Santa!!!??

I've mostly been a good little girl. He brought Angelica stuff, you know, on the Rugrats? So maybe I've been good enough this year to get a few of the things on my list.

And this is going on the TOP OF MY LIST!!! This is so cool, Dr. Dean. How old are your kids? Can they come out to play? I have to go for a little bit, though. We have to take Miss Holly's daughter to get an oil change and a spekshun sticker. I have some fish stickers and a couple of sparkly unicorn stickers and I'd give her those, but the grown-ups said she HAS to have a spekshun sticker, whatever that is. It sounds like one of those weird Farmville things you have to run around and collect. Any of you have a spekshun sticker so I don't have to go? I'd rather stay here and play.

Hi, Irma, I hope you get your Special Wish from Santa! You've been very helpful telling your story and showing kids how cool fish are as long as you take good care of them and give them love and kindness. I didn't know there was a fish school until Miss Holly wrote down your story and told us about the school.

That sticker on the car is kind of like the special band-aid you sometimes get with the ouch shots you need for school. It shows that the car got a checkup and is ok. Now, putting a fish or unicorn sticker next to it may not make the car drive better, but will look cool, like those special band-aids. Why not give Miss Holly one to put on?

Hope your day was fun and you tell us all about it soon ^_^

Miss Kate, that's a great idea! She's always saying how her car needs more personality or something. Now I know one of the things I can put into her stocking for Christmas. Thank you.

I have had so much fun today. My guppies and me are so tired, but so happy. I have to go to school tomorrow, so I guess I should go to bed and give Miss Holly her computer back. Bye for now!

A real life fish school?

Now I want to get my old tank and fill it up with water and start buying guppies too and train them.

This is a most appropriate blog for the book tour. Now, that even "Dr. Fish" endorses it, the guppies are safe. lol.
