Fish Altruism and Reciprocity

There is growing evidence that fish are very perceptive, social creatures. This article about cleaner fish and their 'clients' demonstrates that fish can observe the behavior of another fish to generate an "image score" based on how cooperatively the other fish interacts with others. In future interactions, the first fish behave cooperatively with the one it sees acting altruistically.

The ability to learn from observation and to associate actions with outcomes is exactly what is required to learn tricks. No wonder Fish School works!
